Sunroof not closing properly

Hey Everyone,

I just did a quick search of the forums and could not come up with an answer, so here it is:

I have '94 Park Avenue Ultra. The sunroof operates. When I am closing it, it will not stop between open and vent. What could be the problem here?

Re: Sunroof not closing properly

I have the same problem sometimes, also it would not react properly when closing. I think this is due to a bad contact in the switch.
Unfortunately, another thing that isn't in the Haynes manual

Re: Sunroof not closing properly

Well, if I am right that the switch is the culprit, we just need to know how to remove it without breaking anything. Then it can be cleaned, repaired or replaced.

Re: Sunroof not closing properly

I've never had a sunroof, and I'd prefer to keep it that way, though it seems like more and more cars have them, so I will probably be stuck with one soon enough. However, I feel the need to ask a series of obvious questions here...
1) Does it stop in the vent position when opening?
2) Are you certain that it ever stopped there when closing?

I have used a few sunroofs that don't stop at vent, and it sounds to me like it's more likely to be by design than an actual problem (perhaps to get the thing closed faster without having another position in the switch). I'm not saying there's no reason to want to stop at vent when closing, as I can think of a few, but some engineer may have felt it unnecessary, especially considering the number of people with the same behavior.

Re: Sunroof not closing properly

At least in my case, there would be a problem with a contact/the switch. Sometimes the roof won't close and I have to fiddle with the switch, it just goes from small steps at once to closing at once and then to the vent position. When you close it then it opens all up....
But yes, it should stop between open and vent.

Yes,

The sunroof is designed to stop between open and vent. This problem has developed in the last 2 months.

Re: Sunroof not closing properly

Is the sunroof switch different on the 91 and 95 models? I see you can order the 91 switch online ($20) but not for the '95 model?

Re: Sunroof not closing properly

Don't trust the dealership. I went to a Buick dealership soon after I bought the car, and they didn't know how to remove the brake shoes!!

I will try to remove the switch to clean it this weekend. The Haynes manual does not detail how to remove that switch. Being an electrician, I think I can figure it out . Anyway, I'll let you know how it goes.

The Haynes manual only details the very obvious ...
Can you make some pictures of the process?

Re: Sunroof not closing properly

At the wrecking yard I noticed a PA with the roof panel (with the sunroof switch in it) hanging out. I took some pictures for you. I don't know if the switch is servicable. There also seems to be a relay for the sunroof which can be the culprit.

Re: Sunroof not closing properly

I did not get a chance to work on the sunroof this weekend. I got busy with other chores
Thanks for the pics from the junkyard.
I may end up pulling the fuse and investing in some silicone caulk! This has been the most frustrating part of owning this car.

Re: Sunroof not closing properly

No need to apologize..... The more I think of it, the more I think that the problem is in the relay. But where is it? In the roof, under the dash, under the hood? Of course nothing in the Haynes about this.. again
