So I took my boxy to pepboys

I noticed my car leaking a lil oil in the driveway other day, and knew it was about time for a oil change, oil filter, pcv valve, etc. Me being tired from working my ass off all week just decided to drop it off at pepboys just to do a complete check. And this is what they fount that needed attention or what they "suggested" to be done

All together came out to $1,900.00 + =

Quote:
$16.49x1 Fel-pro gasket valve cover gasket
$186.91x1 Remove & Replace valve cover Gasket – Both
$30.79x1 Fel-pro gasket timing cover set
$474.39x1 Remove & replace timing cover gasket
$27.99x1 Fel-pro gasket rear main bearing seal set
$42.89x1 Fel-pro gasket oil pan set
$263.88x1 Remove & replace oil pan gasket
$335.85x1 Remove and install transmission assembly
$154.79x1 Power STR gear/valve remanufactured steering gear
$161.93x1 Remove & Install gear(complete)
$82.36x1 Remove & Replace power steering hose
$30.79x1 Omega pressure hose
$99.99x1 Auto Transmission Fluid change

So I take it home upset cause I was actually hoping this engine and tranny would last me while I build this 350 and plus its my daily that gets me to work everyday I dont know what to do. The plan was to not put too much money into the v6 thats in ther now, hasnt done me wrong not once till just now later this night after I got it back from pepboy the check engine light poped on a few times then it died on me when in the drive through at wendys and died on me again when backing it up into my driveway. But it started right back up after it dies.

Its also been idling real bad after high speeds.

EX. Right when I get off the freeway and hit the frist red light it idles real bad like its going to die then I have to put it in neutral and then it stops then put back in drive when it hits green.

Right now im thinking im just gonna try and sell it for the most I can get for it and buy a another car for a daily driver and find another boxy(just the body) for a few hundered bucks.

Re: So I took my boxy to pepboys

First and foremost, get a second opinion. I don't value Pep Boy's estimates or work. I think you'll find that there may be less that NEEDS to be done now, so you can stick with your original plan. I wouldn't be surprised if they went ahead and did the work, only to have your engine apart, and then come back to you and tell you that you need this and that in order to "do the job properly". Items that they didn't notice or plan on before taking your engine apart. I've seen them do it to others before. How many miles on the engine?

Re: So I took my boxy to pepboys

O hell naw lol, I already told dude just to check everything an see whats leaking an that they have to call me to verify if I want any work done before they can start, which they did an called me before. It would have been some problems if I came back an my engine was all disassembled.

But the car has 139,360 miles.

Has anyone on here ever used seafoam on their caprice?

"So I took my boxy to pepboys"

I'm so sorry.

Just be careful when you put seafoam in it - it can do a great job of cleaning the engine but it does contain water (regardless of what others say) and can be harmful if not followed to the letter of the direction label.

Oh, and how in the hell does it cost twice as much labor to replace the timing cover, than to replace the oil pan gasket? You have to lift the engine to get the oil pan off!

Run, run far far away and follow '97ventureowner's advice. Get a second opinion. Pep Boys sucks and it's my life's dedication to seeing they get as little business as possible. I say this because I took my nine charley one to them to have an alignment performed. While on the rack, the guy told me it needed shims (well duh!) and they charge a separate charge of $85/hr to install them on top of the alignment. Needless to say the car wasn't properly aligned and they basically told me to f___ off when I wanted them to make it right. This was nearly two years ago (Nov. 29, 2006).

thats why i hate big companies like that, its all just a scam to boost sales for the store, they try to find anything wrong even with a perfectly running car.

Re: So I took my boxy to pepboys

Well the car has been running perfect beside the rough idle(explained above), the check engine light popping on an off now, and it died on me two times last night.

Im going to take it somewhere else this week. I use to take all my cars to Napa but all the people I knew that work there no longer work there and not to mention the higher prices they are charging these days.

Mines leaking oil and tranny fluid. I just put more oil and tranny fluid in when required. all in all, cheap.. XD

Never broke down due to that, only once when going to work did the low oil light come on. (But oddly, my change oil light seems to have burnt out, but then again, i know when to change it anyway).

Re: So I took my boxy to pepboys

i agree with mod i wouldn't take my bicycyle to pep boys. and you have to sigh a paper to go for them to do the work that needs to be done. and i really doubt if they fixed your oil leak unless it was oil sending was leaking but 1000 some dollars is way to much they rip people off like my brother inlaw. i would fight them on that bill.

Re: So I took my boxy to pepboys

Back when I first met my wife 15 years ago, her mother's rearview mirror had fallen off of her windshield. Now she's not the sharpest tool in the shed, she ended up going to a nearby Pep Girls and they wanted something like $6to$8 for the adhesive and $32 in labor just to reinstall the mirror . And yes she had the work done there for that price : I asked the guy inm the shop why the high labor cost and he started in,"Well it is an SUV (it was a '91 Explorer,) and they are a little harder to do than a car."
"Say what!

Lmao

Yeah I dont even think its that serious, the oil spot it left in the driveway was just a few lil tiny drops.

Off topic but are there any product out there that can actually remove oil spots from your driveway? Any products you guys might recommend

dawn dish soap mixed with hot water and a stiff scrub brush is a cheap easy way. or if you got a power washer , it works easier.

Re: So I took my boxy to pepboys

Turn the hot water heater to max.
Get a sink-to-hose adapter, and heavy gloves.
Park on your $30 ramps when you get home next time.
Hose off the HOT motor (underneath), not cold, so it will evaporate faster.

Once it's clean and dry, do some tune work, and check to see where there's oil leaks. Check for vacuum leaks, and fuel pressure, for starters...

See you tube fuel pressure test. For vac leak test:
Loping idle is vacuum leak. 30 year old lawnmower, or a new car on the lot. If it sucks air where it ain't supposed to, it lopes. It won't vaporize fuel well either.

Brick on pedal, block Throttle Body arm, anything to get a STEADY idle. 1200rpms or so... Feed starting fluid spray, A LITTLE AT A TIME, EVERYWHERE. Rev increase is the leak.

In a tough spot to pinpoint? Light a book of matches, blow it out while the heads are burnin', and feed the smoke to the leak.

these type of vehicles leak small amounts of everything...this is how they were designed in the rust belt this aids in controlling rust..

your vehicle idles ruff probably because your vaccum lines need attention...this is no surprise that the rubber is cracking...

If you plan on keeping replace them all....the injestion of un filtered air into your engine will quickly wear it out..

at your mileage I would replace the O2 sensor ...this sensor requires replacing at 100,ooomi...this is the expected oem life ...this will give you the check engine lt going on and off...after replacement you should see better performance....

use of any crankcase cleaning can be damaging...so be careful on use, IF needed..
