Re: 99 jetta 1.9 tdi

the pump timing can only be checked with a scan tool with engine running. To adjust turn the engine off and loosen the 4 bolts on the gear and turn the gear (foward to advance) (reverse to retard).

Re: 99 jetta 1.9 tdi

There are only three bolts holding the IP gear to the pump, but that doesn't matter.. Also, ether will destroy a TDI in short order. I put a set of rods in one a few months ago due to a few bent ones from an ether overdose. That was one very expensive can of starting fluid, LOL

When you did the timing belt/water pump, did you use the proper lockdown tools for the cam and IP, there's really no way to do it properly without them.. you can get away with a drill bit for the Injection pump, but you really need the cam lock tool..

You also really need a factory type scan tool to check the injection timing.. I use VCDS (used to be called vag-com). It's actually more functional than the facory VW scan tool..

Also I hope you replaced the large roller on the bottom near the water pump. That will be the first thing to fail if it wasn't..

You can get all the parts in one kit from a variety of online vendors that comes with all the 100k parts from the 2003.. Belt, tensioner, all 3 rollers, water pump, one time use bolts, serp belt, etc..
