2001 Ford Explorer Sport 4wd Engages And Disengages while driving!!!!!!!

I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport 2dr. 4.0 SOHC V-6 When 4wd is engaged it sparatically will click on and off the light on the dash goes on and off as well as a noise which corresponds to it. i believe to be coming from under the dash on the passengers side. Anyone know if theres a relay or something thats common to go bad??? The truck has Roughly 92,000 mi. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated. Also What is the proper way of engaging the 4wd on this vehicle, it is my girlfriends so im not sure if it should be in neutral when engaged or on the fly, either way gets the same results.

Re: 2001 Ford Explorer Sport 4wd Engages And Disengages while driving!!!!!!!

not sure as to the problem, but as for proper engagement of the 4wd according to the manual it says that switching from 2wd to 4hi you can do it on the move up to 45MPH (I'd never do it at more than about 5MPH myself) and to go from 4hi to 4lo you have to be completely stopped with the brake depressed and the tranny in neutral. Hope this helps and good luck with the problem.
