Post I smell gas by my gas tank

Is it normal for the gas tank to smell like gas all the time?

Is there a breather or something on the top of my gas tank

I can smell gas everytime I stand near my gas tank on my truck

Re: I smell gas by my gas tank

No a strong smell speels a leak.
YEAR MAKE AND MODEL?
Good gas cap?
Low or full tank or both?
Dual or singal tank
Have a look underside and see if any wet spots.
Also check fuel lines from tank to engine.
Let us know what you see,

Re: I smell gas by my gas tank

I had a bit of a smell only when the tank was full. Turned out, my filler neck had started to rot out. Figured it out when I'd get it mostly after driving into my driveway forward, which made me turn right, so the gas was sloshing more towards teh filler neck. Just something to look at.

Any check engine lights?

If no wet spots you will need to check tank for holding vacuum and the evap. emission canister and hoses and valves.
Good Luck

If you had a fuel tank problem the check engine light would come on in most cases...It is possible that the cannister above/next to tank is in need of replacement. If you fill up your vehicle and then don't drive very far the expanding gas could saturate the carbon in the cannister.

check the fuel filter fittings also..

I have 2000 sil...and this would not be normal..

I forgot to mention that our vehicles have a fuel filler pipe. this componet is what the gas cap screws into....this pipe is not coated with any rust inhibitors and these do rust out...it is very possible that this filler pipe has pin holes...also check for the copper ground strap to be fully connected to the grounding point as this strap corrodes easily...
