1995 will crank but not start
Hello everyone, and thanks in advance for any help.
I have a 1995 Park Ave w/93,000 miles. Just recently when you drive more than 10 miles and shut it off it will not start. It will crank but will not start. I just drove it and than shut it off and it wouldn't start. I put a fuel pressure gauge on it and it showed about 48 lbs of pressure. If I wait an hour or so it will start right up. The car runs fine other than this problem. I did not check to see if there was spark. I thinking it has something to do with the security system. Does anyone have any ideas? |

Re: 1995 will crank but not start
What makes you think the problem is the security system? My info says passkey 11 is both starter and fuel disable. I'd go ahead with some of the basic tests and check codes.
If there is no spark at the plugs or injector pulse while cranking, I'd check for an rpm signal. |

Re: 1995 will crank but not start
Thanks for the info jdl the reason I thought of the security system being a probably cause is the security light stays lit and does not go out. I tried to scan the system this afternoon but I guess the system is not obd II compliant. I will have to find an older scan unit.
I also check to see if I have spark or if there is injector pulse. How do you check the crank shaft position sensor? |

When you have a no start issue after driving disconnect the cam sensor,
if it start there is your problem. Late 95 are OBD II the older model you can jump terminal A and B on the test DLC codes 18 and 41 will be your Cam sensor. Good hunting

Re: 1995 will crank but not start
Thanks for the help Indy Tech. I drove the car again and it wouldn't start. I removed the cmp sensor but it still wouldn't start. I checked the sensor and the circuit going to it and they all check out. I was glad too as there is not much room to get in there.
Looking at a Pontiac manual for a newer 3800 and it said that if the sensor and circuits check out the PCM maybe bad. Does anyone know if a PCM can operate for a while and than after it is run not work. The PCM in this car is located on the passenger side under the dash. The car has a obd II connector but is obd I as my scanner won't read anything it just comes back as an error. Can you short this type of connector to get the codes out? Anyway I checked for spark and there was none. I was by myself so I couldn't check to see if the injectors were pulsing. Anyone have any ideas? |

Re: 1995 will crank but not start
When it won't start do you have spark and injector pulse, basic first steps in the diagnosis

Re: 1995 will crank but not start
You have obd 1.5. You have to buy an Actron CP140 or somethin like that, that can read it. The only other way is the dealership. Their is a thread in the lesabre forum concerning this.

Re: 1995 will crank but not start
Cman, that is an Actron CP9145 or CP9150. These are being replaced with newer models, so you can get a deal while they last! The CP9150 comes with case and all cables for around 150-bucks if you do some shopping!

Re: 1995 will crank but not start
You may have more than one problem, divide it, go from there. If there is no spark at any of the plugs during cranking, do some testing at the ignition module. The first thing is check B+ and ground at the ignition module. The two terminals my be lettered at the connector P&K. Pink wire is voltage, with the key on, black wire letter K is ground. Take the connector loose, turn on the key, you don't need to crank it, put a test lite between the two terminals, it should lite-up, it wouldn't hurt to check the actual voltage. If it doesn't lite, then use the chassis or metal part of engine for ground. If you can't find any voltage on the pink wire, remember key on, That is switched ignition voltage, you'll have to backtrack the circuit, there is a fuse on that circuit, I don't have the fuse rating or location, right in front of me. If that checks out, we can go to the crank sensor. If I remember correctly, four wires, ref voltage, ground, and two signal wires.

Re: 1995 will crank but not start
Sorry about the bad info, I forgot exacly which model it was. I bought a CP9150 of ebay for $148, plus free shipping. Its a pretty nice scan tool, and I like the live data portion, just don't drive and do it, got me pulled over by undercover police .

Re: 1995 will crank but not start
Sorry about the time lapse. I was waiting to see if the problem had been solved. I replaced the crank shaft sensor and have not had any starting or stalling problems for one week. I hope this sensor was the cause of the problems. Thanks to everyone for your help.
