Welcome to AFs!

I don't believe the two codes are related. Have you check out the stickies at the top of this forum? There is some good information in those posts.

The p0401 code like you said refers to egr valve with egr flow less than expected. Your egr ports in the intake manifold are probably cloged.

I just had the upper intake off on my 98. I had one port pluged compleatly. I was getting a missfire. Pulling the upper intake isn't too bad of a job to do. Do a search on the forum and you should find posts of other guys doing this job.

I hope this helps.

Regards

Dan

Re: egr...camshaft sensor problem

When running is there any noise or whine coming from the camshaft synchronizer (the part that the camshaft sensor is mounted to)? The bearings in these are know to fail causing faulty signals from sensor. If so do a search of this forum, there are several threads detailing replacement of synchro. A thorough check of circuit wiring would also be recommended.
