Question Making a 4th Gen. Turbo kit?

I posted this in the turbo forum, but no answer so I figured I would ask here:

"So whats the big deal with building your own turbo kit for a 4th gen CRX or Civic? Other than experience you gain it seems that most of the home built turbo kits turn out to be most expensive then if they were purchased from like F-max, GReddy..."

Any thoughts?

Alot of times when making your own kit you tend to purchase all the nice parts and it ends up more than a pre-made kit because most pre-made kits don't have all top of the line parts or are missing some parts...ie greddy The greddy kits don't come with an intercooler and therefore you will have to source one.

Air Research makes REALY nice turbos! How do i know? They cotracted Mercedes benz, and mercedes benz only uses the top notch parts SUCH AS Bosch<----- :ylsuper I presume you got it off a mercedes SLK or something mercedes right? If so I hope you had the common sense to grab more than just the turbo, like the bosch fuel filter and bosch fuel pump and the bosch injector controller... How do I know all this? Because I have a mercedes 5 cyl turbo diesel being built in my back yard as we speak! Should be swaped in on friday! Only makes 140 stock and it only revs to 2500 Rpm's stock. My dad bought a brand new engine and built the piss out of it but left that turbo (He said they dont get much better than Air Research) We are lookin at about 180 Hp and somewere in the ballpark of 900 Ft lbs of tq. This ought to be interesting!

civic turbo setup

to answer your previous question ...NO .... i got it off a turbo Saab...and the set up i have is going to consist of the following

apexi -s-afc
mitsubishi 450cc injectors
2nd gen mitsu blow off valve
hf exhaust manifold
adapter plate ( fits between hf manifold and turbo )
intercooler ( from a saab or mitsu or anything i can get my hands on thats cheap)

and if i have forgoten anything i will update you later.... but for the most par you have several web sites that can help with the custom set up...

also..you can use a turbo from any late model vovlo- i beleive its called a kkk turbo - and a 2nd gen turbo from an eclipse or eagle talon ...but for the most part the vovlos and the saab's have the best turbos aside from the mitsu..if you can find one at the junkyard....easy to remove and easy to check for shaft play and cracks in the housing ....

here are the links

Use a turbo off a 85 Mersedes SLK 5 cyl turbo diesel! You wont be sorry! Trusy me on this one... If it make 8 Psi @ 2500 Rpms imagine what it can do @ 5K... that thing can run 12 lbs of boost @4500 with no problems!

with the "homemade kit" you get to put in or take out whatever parts you need or want if you go with a greddy kit lets, say but want a blitz BOV then you wasted money on the greddy BOV, so the homemade kit is easily altered to fit your needs.

85 mercede's slk turbo????

well i wast aware of this turbo off of that particular car..i will look into ..how ever ZC with stock internals isnt really good for more than 8 psi of boost ..after that expect to break a rod or 2...these engines are onl y good for 8,000 rpm ( 200 hp at the wheels) and i dont plan on boosting more than 7 psi ..just to be safe...

if you think about it, each pound of boost translates to 10 hp....so with 7 psi ( 70 hp ) plus the stock 130 ( give or take ) im looking at about 200hp ....( not at the wheels )

what do you guys think of that set up..i just want some feedback and 1 or 2 opinions...

Apexi S-AFC ( 200 bucks )
auto meter boost gage/ air to fuel gauge (100 bucks )
450 cc injectors ( free )
AirResearch Turbo From a Saab ( 50 bucks )
Hf manifold from a civic (20 bucks )
volvo side intercooler..( will upgarde later for one thats bigger..) 40 bucks
custom piping ...whatever it costs to buy..i will fabricate charge pipes at school in my welding class...
so no more than 500 bucks give or take will i spend on this project...no bad...hope all turns out.....( fingers crossed )
