1996 Silverado Won't Start

Over the past few months my 96 Silverado (5.7L, 90000 miles) has gotten steadily harder to start. Sometimes 2 tries, than 3, than 4.... Finally a dozen tries and now it won't start at all. Truck runs great once its running, it just doesn't want to start.

Ignition system fine, good spark. When I take the air cleaner/intake off and pour an ounce of gas into the manifold, it fires up immediately and runs great. But if I let it sit more than an hr, it won't start. Have to pour gas down the intake.

When you put the key in the on position, you can hear the fuel pump start whirring for about 2 secs, than goes quiet, so fuel pump relay seems to be working.

Any thoughts here before I start wasting money? Much appreciated.

Re: 1996 Silverado Won't Start

Bought a fuel pressure gauge. Pressure before start-up is only 53psi. If you turn it on/off a few times, you can get it up to about 57. But it should be over 60psi, so tomorrow I'll be replacing the pump. Hopefully its that simple.

Thanks

i don't think it's your pump if you hear it zing right up that loss of fuel presure is not that much. have you cganged fuel filter? it does sound like injector problem.

Check the fuel pressure regulator first before blowing $$$$ on a pump. A $40 part located under the plastic intake cover on the rear of the injector spider assembly.

I would say fuel pump. Vortec engines are very picky on having the right pressure to get started.

I believe that he did replace the fuel pump as he stated the pressures were too low...
