95 Lumina Humming Noise

I have a 1995 Chevy Lumina that has recently started to make a humming noise while going straight or to the left. When i start turning slightly right the noise goes away. There is no noise when idle and it seems to be louder at higher speeds. So what tests could i do to figure out what the problem is and how difficult would it be to repair myself? Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to AF, bad ft wheel bearing or a scalloped tire. Jack up the front and look for play in the wheel hub. Instructions for this job are at autozone.com, repair guides. Sounds like the rt wheel.

Re: 95 Lumina Humming Noise

I jacked up the tires and spun both sides and couldnt hear any noise coming from either side. How else could i tell if the bearing is the issue or not and are there any other things i should check?

With no weight or load on the wheel there will be no noise ,any play in the wheel/hub?

you will not have any play in your wheel or hub, trust me on this one,it is your bearing
i just did my front pass.side wheel bearing
i doubted every one because i jacked it up,check for play and to me,it was not the bearing, but i said fudge it and took it apart(remove wheel, caliper, undo axle nut, remove four hub bolts)and sure as shit,it felt as if there was sand in there when you turn it

Re: 95 Lumina Humming Noise

The play removes the guesswork if it is found in one hub, more times than not the hub/bearing will show some play, if not a road test doing figure eight manuevers will pinpoint the problem.

Get it in the air again, and grab and pull the wheel at 9 o'clock, and 3 o'clock position. Pull and push (not spin). Should be ZERO play.
