Low Collant... Help Me Please Pontiac Grand Am

THE LOW COOLANT LIGHT ON THE DASH CAME ON SO I CHECKED THE COOLANT TANK WHILE THE CAR WAS COOL AND IT WAS LOW SO I ADDED SOME 50/50 ANTIFREEZE COOLANT TO THE COLD FILL LINE AND PLACED THE CAP BACK ON. ABOUT 4 HOURS LATER I DROVE ABOUT 9 MILE AND STOP AT A DRIVE THRU ( HEY I WAS HUNGRY) AND WHITE SMOKE WAS COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD BUT IT DIDNT SMELL LIKE IT WAS OVER HEATING AND THE TEMP GAGE WENT TO 260. i THOUGHT IT WAS BECASUE A LITTLE OF THE 50/50 SPILLED. ANY HOW I PULLED OVER TO LET IT COOL AND THEN DROVE HOME. WENT TO WORK THE NEXT DAY AND GOT ON THE HIGHWAY AND IT ALMOST TOUCHED THE RED AND THE LOW COOLANT LIGHT CAME BACK ON... I WAS SCARED. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE TEMP GAGE STARTED TO LOWER. MAYBE THE FAN KICKED IN. WHEN I GOT TO WORK AND TURNED THE CAR OFF I COULD HEAR SOMETHING THAT SOUNDED LIGHT LIQUID BOILING AND OR DRAINING. I POPPED THE HOOD TO SEE WHAT I COULD SEE AND ALL I SAW WAS A LTTLE BIT OF SMOKE COMING FROM NEAR THE COLLANT TANK . BUT ONCE AGAINIT DIDNT SMELL LIKE IT WAS OVER HEATING.

DOES ANY ONE HAVE A SUGGETIONON WHATS GOING ON AND HOW TO HANDLE????????????

Re: Low Collant... Help Me Please

Welcome to AF !

It is kinda important to post your cars year , engine size , and rough mileage for adequite assistance.

You have an air pocket trapped in the cooling system.
It will need purged out so it quits overheating and over flowing the reservoir which was probly causing the smoke.

Here a thread that might help get this done.

Hope that helps !

ps- please drop the caps !
