Looking at first 911 (New Info)

Here's my situation. I am a US Marine Stationed in Japan. I am beginning to look for a car to drive while I am here and possibly take back to the states with me when I leave. I noticed at one dealer here that there is a red 1982 911 SC. It has been sitting in the same place at the dealer for about 3 weeks now, never moved and as far as I can tell never touched. I talked to the dealer today, he is asking $5000 as is. It needs a little bit of body work, Just minor rust repair on the Right rear fender. The Headgaskets were just replaced. The Dealer said it had a "Sportomatic Transmission" . Does anyone know anything about Sportomatic Transmissions? Also, Does anyone know of the differences between a Japanese Spec 911 SC and a US Spec 911 SC of this age? I have pics if anyone is interested.
Thanks in advance.

I'm not really sure about a sportamatic in a 1982...I would really try the Pelican Parts BBS...a lot more people that are hugely knowledgable.

Only other comments I have is 5K sounds a bit low (byy US standards), I'd be a bit suspicious. It has rust...the rule of thumb is where there is a little, there's a lot more. When I bought mine, it cost about $2K to fix rust and respray...expect more. Other things to look for are the carrera chain tensioner upgrades (look for oil lines going to chain covers below and left and right of the alternator), pop-off valve in the airbox, etc. Also, you might want to find out what it will cost to upgrade to import it to the US if it's not a US model (can check the VIN to find out).

Once again, I would really check the other BBS. They should also have a pre-purchase inspection checklist you can print out. Fascinating BBS, check it out.

My 2 cents

hey you jarhead!!

have you talked to your ncoic before making a huge purchase like that? anyway, why don't you do what everyone does, by a cheap car just to last you. you'd invest in another 5 grand just to bring it stateside. look for a car that you want when you get back. semper fi.
