98 Malibu Keyless Entry Programming

Yes, I've read the past posts with these instructions:

1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Ground the receiver program terminal. Jump the two terminals located in the programing ground connector. (What this means in simple terms is locate the wires that run on the right side of the trunk. There is two black wires that has a plug on the end with two prongs. It is in between the antenna and tail lights.)
3. Within 2 seconds of connecting the prongs the door locks will lock. The unlock and the rear compartment lid release will produce a cycle, causing the horn to chirp. This indicates that the module is ready for reprogramming.
4. Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons at the same time until the doors lock and unlock. The rear compartment lid will release and the horn sounds to indicate that the transmitter has successfully been reprogrammed. (Hold buttons down for approximately 12 seconds)
5. Repeat the previous step for the remaining transmitters.
6. Remove the jumper at the program connector.
7. Verify the proper operation of each transmitter.

I'm having a problem either locating the CORRECT black wire with the prongs in it, or it's fried. I've found a wire that runs along the right side of the trunk that looks like a reverse electrical plug, but inserting anything metallic in there will not cycle.

Yes, it has keyless entry. Yes it's worked in the past. I've had to switch out the Instrument Cluster just recently, which seemed to kick out the code.

Can anyone post a picture of what this thing is supposed to look like, or an alternate method?

Check your fuses and wiring. I've pulled the instrument cluster on my Malibu a few times working on the Passlock system and it never lost the code for the keyless entry.

Ah but the battery died due to the short, plus an engine relearn procedure was performed (battery was unplugged for 15 minutes) which would cause the codes to be reset.

Make sure you are not pressing the brake pedal at all during the procedure as it will interfere with programming mode.

Also, some report success programming with the driver's door open - where others report success with all doors closed.
