Which engine code engine will work in my 88?

I have a 93 Delta 88 that has a bad engine. I'm going to Pull and Save to see what they have. The engine code on mine is an L, but will any 3.8 work? I'm assuming the code just designates which computer the car has in it or am I wrong on that?
