2002 Alero Wheel Bearing?

Hi all,
my wifes 02 Alero occasionally has these 3 lights come on: Anti Lock - Service Engine Soon- Trac Off. She stopped by our local mechanic & he spent a few minutes and said front pass side wheel bearing is bad. Does this sound typical? I just dont want him to do unnecessary repairs and he didnt remove the tire to inspect the bearing. Any advice is appreciated.
Thx, Karl

I had this problem and what would happen would be the front end would make a brrrr sound (best I can do) occasionally, kinda like going over the groves in the side of the road, but not as severe. Do a search hear or on google re the symptoms your experiencing. I think I paid 160 with labor for the passenger side one.

good luck

Re: 2002 Alero Wheel Bearing?

If he scanned the car with an ABS capable scan tool, he is probably right. Wheel bearings are a common issue with Aleros, and will cause the lights you mentioned to come on most of the time. The tire does not have to be removed to check the bearing, they are sealed units and the actual bearing cannot be seen. It is possible to check for play if he jacked the car up, but even if there was no play, that does not mean the bearing is good.

Just out of curiosity, how many miles were on the car when the bearings went?

Hi,
The car has 48,000 miles & it was the wheel bearing unit after having a 2nd mechanic look at it.
