No Reverse 323i
Has anybody had any luck repairing the broken reverse band in the GM5 auto transmission? The car in question is a 2000 323i. How difficult of a job is it? I see where most people just put in a reman but I want to avoid that cost. I'm a transmission mechanic so I'm not afraid to tear into it, I just want to know what I'm up against. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks.

This is an edit to my prior post. I got some misinformation. The transmission is a ZF5HP19 with a broken drum. My question is how difficult is this drum to replace and will I need any special tools?

I doubt you'll be able to find any parts. I was a BMW dealer parts manager years ago and BMW went away from offering any trans parts in 1980 for even manual transmissions let alone automatics. Let us know what you find out! My old '94 had a drip transfluid leak ~ under warranty they replaced the entire transmission! Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. Yes, BMW can't sell the parts needed. Here's what I recommend. Go to dosebmw.com and they will sell you everything you need to repair the transmission for $500. I did the whole job for the first time start to finish in about 10 hours. It is not a difficult repair, any competent transmission shop should be able to do it. As long as there aren't any other issues I wouldn't be afraid to only repair the broken drum ($1600) as opposed to a total rebuild ($3000) or replacement ($4500). Good luck everyone!
