2002 G20 Sport vs 2001 Celica GTS

I own a 2002 G20 Sport and one of my best close has a 2001 GTS E shift. My car is an automatic luxury 4 door with a 145hp. I forget how much HP he has but its alot more then my car (35 to 45) and on top of that its a lot lighter. Our cars are both stock in the engine area. We have raced eachother 4 times now light to light and I have won all four times. How is the possible I have no idea... 2 of the four times were a joke to me. I expected him to be so far ahead of me but he was at least one car length behind me on those two. But the other two were much longer to the next light. He came very close to beating me on those two (we were side by side at the end) but he still didnt get far enough to beat me. Our cars are also still in the break in period so they arnt even as fast as they should be. This is very sad and reminds me of the Celica comercial, "Looks fast." Hehehe

You got to be kidding?

There is no way GT-S E shift will lose to G20 Auto.

He is putting out 35 more hp and he weights 400 lbs less.

The only conclussion left is HE CAN'T DRIVE!!

If it was GT then I might have believe you.

Even then GT auto weights 500 lbs less although it only has 140hp.

Actually depending on how long the track is you might beat him since you have more torque than him... and unless you're running at the high mph range then you might beat him on the get go...

hp is your "high-end" power, cars running on the track benefit from this but when it comes to drag racing the torque contributes a lot too.

Or, it might also be the driver...

G20 136 lb-ft @ 4800 RPM
Celica GT-S 130 lb-ft @ 6800 RPM

There is no way that 6 lb-ft torque can make up the 35 hp difference and 400 lbs less curb weight.

You need to understand that those numbers are what the engine puts out. You loose some of that as the power goes through the drivetrain. And you never know which would be loosing more. There are many reasons why you always win.

1. He has no idea how to drive.

2. He has a problem with his car.

3. There are just too many factors that can determine hwo wins.

For instance my dad used to have a 1996 Jeep Grang Cherokee. He had the 318 V8 in it. At a light while we were moving we were up against a Honda Civic, it was lowerd with what seemed to be a cat back exaust. Other than that my guess was he was stock. We on the other hand were pulling a 20 foot long empty U-Haul trailer. The Civic was in the lane the would have to merge so he was reving up his engine for the light.
The light turned green and my dad floored it. We slowly passed the Civic and he was giving it all that car could give.
I expected to loose because we had the trailer on the back, but we beat him with room to spare. Without the trailer the Jeep would have beaten him for sure, but he should have been able to take us.

So, you see. There are way too many things that can affect a car when racing.

Now here is another good point. Let me explain the difference between HP and Torque. HP determines how fast you can go in a gear. Torque will determine how fast you get to that speed. Like Rocket said, off the line torque wins but it is HP that will get you in the long run. IF you go a 1/4 or more of a mile I bet he might start to take you. But still there is a small amount of difference in torque between you two.

I have to ask how badly do you beat him?

Both car are torqueless. But one got a great high end and way less weight to move.

Sound like your friend in the Celica is afraid to rev that badboy. The GT-S should kick the G's ass. If you don't rev that baby up you're going nowhere fast. I've driven a ITR before and wasn't all that impressed. It took some time to get into the fat part of the power band but once it did...wheeee! But the Celica would not have good low end torque and if he didn't really rev it to red line in first I could see how he would lose.

Ok actaually the e shift crap sucks...if it where a 6 speed he would womp you. i used to work at a toyota dealership and i drove both cars. the GTS with the auto just bogs untill it hits like 6200 rpm's. I have a 6 speed and its much faster off the line.

I've ridden in a new celica gts, those things start out so slow its unbelievable. by the way, notice the torque numbers are at different rpms. it takes the celica forever to get to 6800 rpm coming out of the hole.

it's just like vtec... when your car starts off normally it gives low torque and low hp but when it hits vtec the numbers suddenly shoot up until you reach the redline....

it's almost like a turbo engine spooling until it reaches vtec... same thing with the GTS if he doesn't rev all that high, it probably won't engage the VVTL-i (or VVT-i) to give him the much needed power....

BTW, i love those G20's.... wish they came with sixes at the least...
