2002 Jeep Cran Cherokee rear brake problem
Last night was going out and noticed the rear driver side wheel was smoking . Drove about 15 miles and came to a stop and noticed the smell/smoke. Went to restaurant and came back out about 2 hrs later to leave and go home. I monitored the rear wheel for smoke on the trip home. Nothing no smoke or smell. I checked this when i drove into the yard. The brakes seem to be fine. My question is should I replace the caliper and pads or hope all is fine?
When i got into the parking lot I moved the parking brake a few time to see if it might of been on a bit. I never use this only owned the car for 4 months. Also do the calipers on the Jeep rear ratchet, do i need the special tool to push back in? Do the rotors have the emergency brake on them? Just need some suggestions. Thanks |

Re: 2002 Jeep Cran Cherokee rear brake problem
If you are sure the parking/e brake wasn't engaged it's probably a sticking caliper. The first order of the day would be to remove the wheel and determine how much damage was done. Worst case scenario would be badly worn pads and scored, warped rotors. Best case would be slightly worn and possibly glazed pads and rotor. Or even no damage, but you definitely need to inspect it.
It will likely happen again unless the caliper is replaced so do this before replacing the pads and resurfacing or replacing the rotor. Also inspect the brake line - a soft rubber brake line can keep the caliper from retracting all the way. Quote:
