Re: whats the expected MPG on my 97 LSI

The automatic 4 cylinder can average a high of 40 MPG if it's running right and not driven hard. Maybe even 45 MPG at the most, but that is not highway speeds. Highways speeds kill fuel economy on the 3 speed auto.

Average car with normal driving will get about 35-38 MPG

30 - 35 The rpms on the highway are way up there, your engine is going 135 miles for every 100 miles you drive.

Re: whats the expected MPG on my 97 LSI

I did a lot of mods to my 1998 to get around 60 MPG, but mine is a standard shift also. On a tank that I really push it, I can almost get 70 MPG from her. Click my sig image and you will see some of the mods I performed including aerodynamics.

Re: whats the expected MPG on my 97 LSI

The jumper is for adjusting timing with a timing light. That's good for adjusting to a number that someone told is good, not knowing your engine's condition, you gas quality, you environmental conditions, etc. To adjust timing to what's best for YOUR car, do this: Take a Sharpie and draw a line across the two aluminum castings to mark where the distributor is located now, you could also tap it lightly with a chisel or scratch it with a screwdriver. Loosen the bolts, turn it 1/4 inch toward the driver's seat, and snug up the bolts. Go for a drive and listen for ping, it sounds like rattling marbles inside the engine and usually comes with two thirds throttle at low speeds. If you hear ping, adjust it back toward the standard position, if not, turn it further. Cheaper gas, dryer or hotter weather, or carbon build up will increase the likelihood of ping so it's not a straightforward one time thing, carry a wrench in the car and adjust it daily for a week or so until you find a point where you just barely hear ping, once in a while. When you find that happy spot, mark the housing again so you can move it back and forth for either emissions test, or good performance.

Re: whats the expected MPG on my 97 LSI

My 2000 with the same engine and auto trans got 42 mpg in my best tank. I drove it real easy to get it. 37 mpg was my normal highway, not trying to get better mileage.

2 weeks ago I bought my second Geo a 3 cyc. 5 speed. It was sucking oil, so I have it in the shop to drop in another low mileage engine and transmission. Prior to taking it in, 6 gas station fill ups revealed 46-55 mpg. Not bad for an engine that was in a state of dying.

I am one of those who paid a deposit on an Aptera, but since those are still a year away, the Geo will have to do.

Re: whats the expected MPG on my 97 LSI

Just checked the mileage on my 1995 1.3l auto transaxle LSI with 111,000 miles. 200 miles at 65-70, no A.C. and 30 miles town driving. Timing advanced 1 degree, 165/80 R13 tires, 40 p.s.i. Mileage- 39.5 (corrected).

Re: whats the expected MPG on my 97 LSI

Well my mpg issue is all over the board! Last Tuesday a 200 mile trip in heavy winds offered 36 mpg driving easy. There were 2 passengers and 300 pounds of cargo in the backseat. On the return trip, it got 54? Less weight by 300 pounds, a slight down hill for much of the trip anf it felt like less wind.

Then Thursday a round trip to Long Beach of 192 miles and it was 50 mpg. I was bringing back 300 pounds in steel tools and had 2 passengers. The road up hwy 14 is also 32 miles of up hill.

I went to Bishop again today and it was 200 miles getting 38 mpg and I haven't refuel from the return path.

This is with an almost new engine in it? With the oil leaking, oil burning engine, I got 46, 53, 55, 55, & 57 mpg on seperate tanks driving atleast 100 miles on each fuel up. I was getting better mpg with a bad engine, go figure?

It runs real smooth, but what is the difference?

I wanted to hit 60 mpg, but don't know what to try next.

MIB
