My transmission for my acura cl 2.2 1997 needs a complete transmission overhaul which is going to cost me $2500-2900 if the shop does it or $3400 if they buy the transmission from a factory..
so im wondering if rebuilding / buying a new transmission would make the car run and feel "new" and if its worth rebuilding or buying it from a factory. ![]() Last edited by 1strandom; 10-01-2008 at 09:58 AM. |

Re: Transmission Overhaul.
cant say if it will make it feel 'new' because we dont know what else is wrong with the car... you also need to figure out how much the car is worth and if the repair is almost as much as the car is worth, just get a new car... 2500 seems high for a rebuild... i would shop around some and ill bet you can get a better price.

Re: Transmission Overhaul.
on kelly blue book the car is worth almost $4000 with my 93,000 miles on it. and i plan on doing it at AAMCO.. and i checked with the local mechanic and even the acura dealership and they both said around the same prices. in the high 2k's or low 3k's.
they said my engine is good; so i was planning to fix the tranny and hopefully it would run for another 3-4 years then i can afford to buy a new car. i just want it to last me through college. and if i were to buy a car it would be used, a nearly 100k car will only fit my budget.. and if that transmission fails; its a death circle i'll be going into. |

Re: Transmission Overhaul.
Im not sure about the AAMCO places near you, but the ones around here are junk.... much like jiffylube... I suggest staying away from them... my rule of thumb is if you go to a mom and pop joint that has been in business for years thats a better choice because if you think about it... they cant afford to be sued if they screw up the job..

Re: Transmission Overhaul.
anybody can SOUND like they know what they are talkin about if they are speaking with someone who doesnt.... they will prolly have some old greasy man up front who looks like the 'master mechanic' type to meet you and talk to you, then have some kid outta high school do it as soon as they bring it out back
