99 alero starts shuts off immediately
I have a 99 alero 4cyl we bought for my son. It has approx 105000 miles, and we have had it for about 3 months. The problem is that yesterday he drove it to school, after school it would not start. It sounds as though it is starting, then within a second or two it shuts off. With NO key in the ignition, the battery light, odometer, interior overhead light and radio stays on. We tried pulling codes and it will not link with the vehicle. We ended up leaving it at his school overnight and plan to tow it home today. I drove the car the day before, it seemed to drive ok, the ses was on, pulled the code po 442 small evap leak. Any ideas of where to start?? The only lights that are on are the service engine and battery, none of the others will light up in the on position, fuel gauge doesn't move either (at least a half a tank) when trying to start all the lights come on briefly then go out except the two mentioned. To our knowledge, there is no security installed.
Thanks! |

Re: 99 alero starts shuts off immediately
Have you made any progress in evaluating this problem? I can't help, but do like to keep track of strange events (and their solutions) regarding Aleros since my daughter's 2001 crops up with its own issues from time to time

Sounds like there may be an issue with the ignition switch?

Re: 99 alero starts shuts off immediately
We had it towed home, battery totally dead, jump started it and runs great! Only code is still the same 441 we had before. All systems are coming up good on the obd reader, was running a bit rich at first, but assume was a bit flooded but that cleared quickly. Only thing we can come up with is the sunroof must have a leak, the water sat up there after the rain the night before, and when it was driven it ran down the front drivers side pillar/colum and into the fusebox and shorted things out, it dried out throughout the day and was able to restart. This weekend pulling the headliner and trying to find the leak, fix it, clean the fuse box and put all new fuses it and see what happens, the fusebox is pretty corroded, which indicates water I would think.
