97 Blazer Shift Shaft Oil Seal Replacement

I'm trying to replace this small, finger size ring gasket which goes on the transmission's side where the shift linkage goes into. After taking the transmission oil pan off, I saw this star shaft metal which are the shifts. Through this ring-size gasket goes a thin-long-metal rod running through the outside linkage into the transmission ring gasket, into the shift star looking metal and into the transmission. How how far does this metal rod go? How do I remove it? I already removed the small nut which is on the side of the star-metal-shift. I need to take the rod out but the front shaft is on the way just a little bit. I need to unhook it from the front, which I took the two small metal sleeves to remove the cross, but how do I remove the shaft once I remove the two small sleeves?? The metal cross holding the shaft is smooth from all four sides, there is no clip to remove nor anything like that? Do I just hit the shaft with a hammer towards the back of the truck or what? Sorry, im trying to be very decribtive becuase I don't know the exact names of these parts. Can you help me replace the shift shaft oil seal? step by step if possible?

Re: 97 Blazer Shift Shaft Oil Seal Replacement

We can not help you do it but only tell you how.

Transmission tools place have make a seal remover and installer with out removing the shift shaft.

Check your local parts places for one.
Some rent or loan the tool.

To remove the shift shaft you first remove the spring arm from valve body.
Then remove clip off of shift rod.
The remove the nut holding the shift arm and rod to shift shaft.

At the same time you have to remove shift linkage and park rod arm and nut from the outside.
The park rod stays on the inside shift bracket.

Now the hard part the book does not tell you about.
To get the shift rod to come out or with burning up case.

When you remove nut and big clip from inside shift rod and push shift arm lose.
Where the shift arm bolts on to shaft you need to file the sharp edge off of the shift rod where the bracket bolts on.

Replace seal and install with a reverse procedure except the filling off sharp edge on shift rod.
Good Luck
