Best ATF to use
I have a 2001 Montana and I'm getting ready to change the Transmission filter and was wondering what brand of ATF would be the best. I believe GM ATF is in it right now. I'm thinking of a non Gm brand. Any input would be greatly appreciated?
Thank you. |

Re: Best ATF to use
Dextron Mercon is the fluid to use. Also do not throw away the pan gasket,it is reusable.

Re: Best ATF to use
Is Dextron Mercon the brand or the type of ATF? I know GM, Ford and Dodge use different type of ATF. If Dextron Mercon is type what brand should i use?

Re: Best ATF to use
Yes it is a type of ATF.When pouring the new fliud in,start with six quarts and run through the gears. It should take 2 more quarts after that.

Re: Best ATF to use
I used regular Valvoline Dexron Mercon ATF, the original owner had the tranny rebuilt around 50,000, the van now has 180,000 miles and I'm going to do the filter and gasket again this fall. This is the fluid I use:

Re: Best ATF to use
Most GM Transaxles use a reusable pangasket and reuse them if in good shape. The black pangaskets in the filter kits suck! The best thing to do with them is throw them away. They are hard to straighten out and leak most of the time.
