98 Silverado steering jerks

Betweem 30 and 55 mph if I make a right or left turn the steering wheel jerks as if something is loose. I have checked all tie rods and steering joints and they are tight. Could this be a problem with the steering wheel speed sensor or powder steering solenoid actuator? Thank You

Re: 98 Silverado steering jerks

check your idler and pitman.
inner tierods should have no more than .2 inch play on relay rod, otherwise, must be replaced. and it's a tiny amount.
been there, had that, done that.

Re: 98 Silverado steering jerks

Your '98 most likely has the EVO steering sytem. It's just a speed sensitive system that increases steering effort at speed. The most likely cause is the SWSS (steering wheel speed sensor) as you suspect. One way to check is to disconnect the wiring at the back of the power steering pump. If your glitch goes away it is not mechanical.

Do a search in this main forum for EVO sensor, or some derivative of that, for a lot of info on the subject.
