Belt/pulley noise?
00 GA GT 3.4L. Half way home from work and I noticed a strange noise coming from under the hood. It sounded like the bell alarm fire stations use just a little muffled and faster! I got home and opened the hood. It seems like it is coming from the belt area. It sounds like one of the pulleys is rubbing on something metal. It isn't a severe grinding noise. Just like it is barely rubbing! Don't know if that is what it is but it is what the sound makes me think of. The belt is tight and has no rips, tears, scratches, or anything like that. As far as I know it is the factory belt but it looks really good. The A/C engages just fine and everything seems to be working OK. What could it be? What are things I should look for? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What about the belt tensioner?

Re: Belt/pulley noise?
I am not really sure what to look for. How can you tell if there is a problem with the tensioner? Two of the pulleys are starting to rust a bit but not too bad.

Re: Belt/pulley noise?
see if this applies- does noise go away when a/c is on? if so keep reading..
This sounds like classic v-5 clutch drag- the compressor clutch air gap has tightened and needs to be adjusted back to .020" . I have answered this several times- and usually see about 1 a week during the hot season. The noise is a scrapping/rattle only with a/c off- should see signs of metal shavings about the clutch hub. The fix is to borrow the installer/removal tool from autozone and back off the air gap a tad. This can be done on car, without removing compressor or refrigerant, and can even be done without removing the shaft nut since the nut does not bottom on the clutch drive. Pull back the plastic cover in wheel well to access

Re: Belt/pulley noise?
Sounds of bells.. could be the water pump pulley it will ring like that, might check that the 4 bolts are tight.
To check the other pulleys try wiggling them, with the car off obviously, if they woble the bearings could be goin out. Check the idler pulley for cracks , pretty sure they are all fiber(plastic) matterial and I've seen the fins/spokes crack, but this wouldnt make a bell sound. Could also have a rock stuck under or close to one of th emetal pulleys making the ringing sound. Good Hunting

Re: Belt/pulley noise?
Well I will certainly check for all of these while I am in there. I think it is going to be the clutch drag. After the above idea I went out and flipped on the A/C. Voa La the noise disappeared! When I go back to school on Monday I will get the tool and adjust the air gap. Hopefully that will take care of it. Like I said I am going to check all the pulleys for any wiggle room as well. Since the car has about 130,000 miles on it is it OK to still have the factory belt? The belt looks real good but should I replace it as a preventitve thing or just wait? Thank you eveyone for all your input! I will keep you posted!
