air conditionor problems

When we start the car the air conditioner wont come on. it used to takw amybe 5 min. to actually kick in. Now it seems like we can go 15 miles before it starts blowing. any suggestions

What year Lesabre?

Those of the early to mid 90's had a/c relays that easily developed carbon deposits on the relay contacts- the relay would engage- show 12 volts without the compressor plugged in, but 0 volts with it plugged in. The fix was to replace the relay- or clean the contacts on the old one- I have done many in the parking lot at work. So you can test it by having a/c requested- then smack the relay with a blunt object- see if compressor engages
