!!!!attention All Grand Prix Mechanics And Owners!!!!!
Listen all Grand Prix owners and mechanics... I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, I has Lately been cutting off on me. While I'm driving it'll just cut off on me,but it starts back up. Last night it took a while to start...I've been asking around trying to get ideas of what it could be but none of them sound right...CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME OUT AND GIVE ME SOME IDEAS OF WHAT IT COULD BE....THANKS

A couple of observations here. First, not ALL Grand Prix' are FWD OR "computer controlled".
Second, rather than "ask around", I would recommend a trip to a qualified repair shop for diagnostics. While it may be "popular", it's not prudent to "shoot in the dark" when electronics are involved. There are a set of step-by-step diagnostic proceedures to narrow down such a problem, to avoid just "throwing parts at it", in hope of finding the problem. We see this a lot. Unfortunately, we see it with some repair shops that refuse to come into the new Century. They spend hundreds of customers' dollars trying to hit the mark. Spend the $60-80 on the diagnostic fee to a GOOD shop and repair the car at minimum overall cost. Jim |

How many miles on your car? How long since the last full tune up? (plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, PCV valve?)
What is the RPM range when it usually dies? What are you doing, accellerating decellerating.....? When it stalls out, does it act almost like letting the clutch out too fast on a manual transmission? When it dies, does the "Trac Off" light turn on? Can you keep it running if you give it gas? Couple things I would try. Pull off the IAC valve, clean it up with come carb spray and a toothbrush. Also make sure its bore in the throttle body is free of carbon. Also with the car off, unplug the MAF sensor, start the car and let the idle stabilize. The drive it to see if it stalls out. A common issue with the Grand Prix that causes this issue is the crankshaft position sensor. It controls the tachometer and spark. There are a couple of symptoms to look for.
1. Do you see the tach go to 0 or the TCS turn off prior to the engine shutting down? If so, it is possible the CPS has gone bad. 2. When it takes a while to start back up, are you getting spark to the plugs. Pull the #1 plug wire and use a spare plug and connect the body to ground and see if you are getting spark to the electrode. If not, it is likely the CPS. Ive had to replace that sensor twice on my GP so far so Im kinda familiar with what all it will cause. Im not saying thats it for sure, but the symptoms are in line with one of those going bad. |
