All my gauges stopped working

I was driving back from school, and there was a click and all the gauges dropped and stopped working. The car still seems to run fine and starts, but im not sure if it could be a fuse problem or something else. My brother seems to think its a fuse, but i dont know where the fuse box or which one would work the gauges. Its a 1997 Grand AM SE

Re: All my gauges stopped working

I am not so sure about the 97, but the 04 has at least three fuse boxes, one on the driver's side of the dash, One on the opposite side of the dash, and one under the hood by the air box.

Re: All my gauges stopped working

Is it just the gauges that stopped working, or are other electrical items not working such as blower, power windows, etc?

Re: All my gauges stopped working

Just the gauges...the turn signals, power windows, power locks, headlights, exc...all work...i just checked all the fuses by the door and only one was out, and i think it went to the lighter, cuz the lighter didnt work and its labeled something like lghr or something of that sort. But i replaced most of the 10 fuses with new ones just incase...but still no luck... Anyone have an idea? Could it be one of the engine fuses? Do they usually work things like that and are they the same kind of fuses? I know nothing about cars hardly

Re: All my gauges stopped working

Welcome to AF RLB31384 !!

You most likly have a bad instrument cluster, or possibly a bad connection the the ICP.

If you do a search you will find many other 95-98 GA owners have had the same issues with the guages not working. Usualy a new or remanufactured one fixes the problem.

Re: All my gauges stopped working

I have researched it but rarely does it ever tell if the person had fixed it or found a way to fix it. Anyways i had my dad and brother look at it because they know more about cars then i do. All the fuses are good, my brother thinks it could be a relay because he pulled out one of the relays and it didn't seem to do anything. Didnt have any way to check and see if it was bad though, he found about 3 wires in the right corner under the hood, and he cut and fixed those. But we can't tell what they fixed either. But I have a little bit of problems from my ABS and it could have fixed that. My cig lighter also seems to be messed up, the fuse was blown in it and I replaced that i plugged in a cellphone charger and it didnt work, but it could have been the cell phone charger.

Anyways they both think that its not the cluster itself and that its a short somewhere...They seem to think its between the ignition and the cluster because if you barely turn the key the gas and temp gauges bounce barely but thats the only time. But they are going to look at it better next weekend. Hopefully its just a wire, but the gauges never move if you bang on the dash or under the dash or around the ignition.
