1989 caprice rattling noise

1989 caprice 350 engine

Well i have had a surging problem when in drive or reverse while idling. aAso when i would put into gear a funny noise would sometimes occur.

I found a leak at the valve cover sprayed carb cleaner and the car would rev up. thinking that might cure my chugging

So i changed the valve cover chugging when it got warm, while in gear still occurs. Imsure i didntdrop anything engine

Im not sure if it has anything to do with changing valve cover but . I took the car for a drive right after i changed the valvecover. Ran fine until it got warm.

When i got home now I hear a rattling noise. but its just if the car is in gear. The psi dropped to like 15psi in drive. and it sounds like it could be coming from under the car near cat convertor.

Flex plate, torque converor? Iv been reading around but really don'tknow what to check for.

Re: 1989 caprice rattling noise

the psi for what? ... if you sprayed carb cleaner on the valve cover and the eninge reved up you just wasted money on a valve cover your intake manifold gasket is leaking which would explain your chugging conndition, about the rattle the only thing i can think of with out knowing where the rattle is coming from you didn't say top of the motor lower end of the motor
is check your rocker arms you may need to adjust one that is if they're adjustable if not you need a new set all 16 of the rocker arms

Re: 1989 caprice rattling noise

psi is engine vacuum i have the gauges on the dash (9cl)

the noise sounds to becoming from the bottom of the engine. it sounds more of a winding noise. like a winch winding up

It happens when i switch gears sometimes the noise will die down and come back and sometimes it will stay as long as im in that particular gear

FYI

Vacuum is measured in inches of mercury (not PSI).

Vacuum is a negative pressure measured in inches of mercury (not PSI).

Re: 1989 caprice rattling noise

The rattle is probably a loose heat shield over the catalytic converter. When the thing is COLD, slip your hand over the converter. Either the top of the converter is flapping in the breeze or the heat shield on the floor pan is loose.

As far as the carb spraying experiment, you probably got some overspray into the EGR valve or a open vacuum line in the area. Take a look at them and try to zero in on where the vacuum leak is.

The cars are also notorious for leaking AIR tubes. Check them from the manifold down to the AIR pump on the passenger side. The driver side is easier to check.

Your chugging could be a lot of things, if the car has mega miles on the original catalytic converter, that could do it. if the outer shield is deteriorating, that is a sure sign its on the way out.

Re: 1989 caprice rattling noise

dash says 130,000 Is that actual Not sure.

Alright well the place where i sprayed carb cleaner before the valve cover change does not rev the engine anymore. The spot in on drivers side next to the aluminum hose thats coming off the snout is where it at first revved.

I understand it can be a intake leak somewhere else I just haven't found it

As far as trans fluid its reddish and not low.

Maybe time to take it in to a shop

Re: 1989 caprice rattling noise

If it's a rhythmic rattling noise and your vacuum gauge reflects a change in step with the noise, I would look into the flapper valve in the exhaust just behind the passenger exhaust manifold, ahead of the Y-pipe. This is a common area of consternation.
