I am curious. What are the advantages for having an aftermarket PCM?

My 05' GP is STOCK performance wise, and I am looking for some add-ons to make my car have some more power!

After purchasing a new PCM is it simple plug and play or is ther alot of work involved with installation? Any suggestions/input is appreciated!

It would help to post what model '05 or which engine.

Re-programmed PCMs are plug and play. A crank variation learn is recommended whenever PCM modules are replaced but not mandatory. Also, premium gas will be required to get full advantage of the programming changes.

u have 2 have atleast hav a 3.4 pully a u bend delete some form of an aftermarket intake but yeah on my 98 gtp it was plug in play with the pcm installed it connected the battery and it fired rite up with no codes sometimes u have problems with them throwing codes theres a certain learn process for it i didnt hav to do that cuz mine was fine good luck but u need those mods for ur car to perform otherwise it will run like shit with that pcm

No you don't, its just recommended by the PCM manufacturer.

The only thing you HAVE to di is run Premium 91 or higher.

I didnt know about the Premium gas. 87 Gas now is already burning me lol. what happens if u run 87?

It would be rather difficult to put a 3.4 pulley on an engine with "no supercharger"!

Well the stock PCM is specifically designed for 87 octane, it's tuned to run on it. If you swap to an aftermarket PCM, they are tuned more aggressively, especially in the spark mapping and knock retard departments. They are designed to run off 91 octane to combat the knock you are likely to see off that setup. If you run 87 octane, you'll likely be fine...for a while that is, because I bet your knock retard will be rediculously high. With the hp you will gain off the PCM, you will lose if you run 87 octane, plus the possibility of piston damage due to knock.

I would suggest if you get it, keep your original PCM so if you can't keep up with the price of premium (which isn't THAT bad), then swap back to factory. That's just what I would do. Of course since I drive a GTP I already pay for the premium, so no loss to me when I run an aftermarket PCM :P

Running 91 or better octane premium gas on a NA SII/III 3800 engine is for maximum hp across the complete power band. You can get by with 87 octane regular octane. Just don't WOT - pedal to the metal too frequently because even a NA engine can get knock retard (KR) which is not good. The basic Stage 1 PCM modules have the WOT timing tables increased by a range of 1-4 degrees depending on the company that programs them so it makes more sense to use premium gas versus regular.
