Lock set Installation

I have a 2000 Grand Prix with the ignition switch and lock set removed. The Problem is lining up the lock set and ignition switch at the same time. One or the other will go on but not both. What step am I missing. This is not the rod type switch, it mounts below the lock set.

Re: Lock set Installation

Thank you BNaylor for the link but I had that one already. the problem was different than I described as it turns out. I had read that you can take the ignition switch apart and clean the carbon from the contacts, which you can. The problem is getting it back together the way the factory does it and I'm still at odds with that. However, a new switch lines up correctly and the proceedure you suggested is flawless.

I thank all those that view it and again thank you.

Re: Lock set Installation

Ah I see now. You disassembled the ignition switch to clean the contacts. See the thread at the link below. The last post.

You have to preload the spring with the cam so that the straight tang on the spring is at 12 o'clock while the bent tang is hooked into the bottom half which has a slot for it. There is a groove in the top half housing that the straight tang slides in. It is easy to do with the right size flat blade screw driver. While I preloaded the spring and held the cam against the lower half of the switch my wife snapped the top half on and it works perfectly. I hate to give up on anything. I cleaned the contacts so I've got a good spare if the one in the car without the spring working properly shows any problems. Thanks again for the encouragement and help. I'm amazed and glad that other people on this site had tackled and solved this problem.

Re: Lock set Installation

thank you c5z06, your information was spot on and invaluable to those who get a kick out of fixing rather than buying. I hope to be able to return the favor to you or someone else that has a problem that I'm familiar with.
