Angry I'm getting sick of this car.. (Misfiring?)

Ok, I have a 91 3000gt SL, auto. We think it has a newer tranny, we have replaced a TON of stuff... (Both windows stoped working, replaced the CV Joints, the trottle positing sensor, all the filters and so on..)
This car was raced around, it even had a push button shifer put in it at one time, then to take it out they just cut the cords and left them hanging. (Smart ones)

There is the background... Here is the problem:

When driving, the reves will go up, then start bouncing all over the place, you can hear it in the engine, and at the same time it's almost like you lose power... (Fuel pump?) It's almost like it's misfiring.

Anyone know what this would be?

(It's not the ECU, checked)

If it matters, I've been hearing a loud "hum" or "wine" when turing left sometimes, and there is also a wistle coming from the same area (it sounds like it's coming from the back of the car). I've been known for my break pads slipping in the back, so I THINK that's what it is.. but thought I'd add it.

Also, when stoped, I can smell the smell of brakes buring (or rubber)

The oil is past it's time to be changed (my hubby as control of the car, and doesn't really keep up with it, as it's not "his car" ) So could it be the oil breaking down?

And insite would be awesome, and thanks in advance!

Re: I'm getting sick of this car.. (Misfiring?)

Ok, so far we think it was the really dirty K and N filter.

New question, why would that cause a jump in RPM and it to "fix it's self" after being driven for a while during driving? (Before we took the filter out)

Unhappy Re: I'm getting sick of this car.. (Misfiring?)

Put in a regular filter, still having the same symptoms...

Any ideas??

(I'm going to get the sensors cleaned tomorrow. {Air, MAF, and so on, incase the K&N got them dirty.})

Re: I'm getting sick of this car.. (Misfiring?)

The hum/ whine is probably your fuel pump or the relay, if it's coming from the rear.

If you don't change your oil soon, you're going to sieze a bearing and bend valves. Then BAM - rebuilding of your block and heads. Spend $30 to save $4000.

Be more specific... at what RPMs does this happen? Does the car sputter? For how long?

Re: I'm getting sick of this car.. (Misfiring?)

Hmm.. I'll look in to my pump...

It's not the 30 it's the fact that he has complete control over the car since he wrecked his, and he won't take the time. At any rate, it's not in as dire need as I thought for the oil change.

My mechanic said it's the MAF sensor...

Well what it is doing now is surging, at idle it goes from 1000 to 1500 back to 1000 and then 1500 then to 1000 idled really hard, check engine light went on for a while then it leveled out and acted fine.

Re: I'm getting sick of this car.. (Misfiring?)

Well, at first the symtpoms of your first problem sound an awefully lot like what happened when my clutch went out. I had major heat spots and had to have mine replaced. However, you drive an atx with "supposedly" newer tranny. I dunno if atx has something like that in its tranny, but if it does, I might look into it. sorry I can't help more. Tell your husband to get off his butt and take care of that fine machine!

Re: I'm getting sick of this car.. (Misfiring?)

Hmm... I'll look into that, it would be my torque converter... It doesn't really seem to be anything with the tranny though....

Thanks though! (If it ends up being my torque converter, I'll give you cookies, lol)

Re: I'm getting sick of this car.. (Misfiring?)

have you tried running it with the MAF unplugged? Does it change anything or no?

Re: I'm getting sick of this car.. (Misfiring?)

I'm not sure my guy tried that.. (I can seem to get together with the guy who works on my car, so I haven't been there)

I know when he plays with it, tapping the box and what not, it REALLY make the car do it's thing... He going to get the sensor cleaner and try it tomorrow, we'll know for sure then.. well, maybe...

If I get the car before he takes it to the shop, I'll try that.

(He really is a good mechanic, I just know my car... it's never the first think you'd think of... >.<)

Re: I'm getting sick of this car.. (Misfiring?)

sounds like the MAF sensor to me, but if it turns out not to be here's some other possibilities.

Re: I'm getting sick of this car.. (Misfiring?)

+1 on MAF with unstable idle. I skimmed but try what blink said and unplug the sensor and look for a difference. If nothing changes, you founc the problem. It's probably dead and cleaning won't help.

Ok we'll try that, where is it located, and when should it be unplugged, before starting, or during idle?

Re: I'm getting sick of this car.. (Misfiring?)

before starting. The plug harness is on the back of the intake pipe to the right of the filter box.

It's that black box your filter attaches to. There is a connector on the right side. Unplug it and then start the car. Does it run any different beside throwing the CEL? If not then you need a new MAS. Your "guy" didn't spray any cleaner in it did he?
