chugging/rumbling then dies

I have an automatic 1996 Chevy Lumina with only 70,000 miles that has always worked great until now. For the last few months my car has been having this problem and is now unreliable to drive. When the car has been sitting for say a day or so, or more, and I go to start it, everything works fine and I could drive it until the gas is emptied so long as I don't turn it off. My problem starts when I turn the car off and and go back to restart it like if I were to go to the store. The car then starts up fine but about three seconds in it starts rumbling and the engine eventually slows down enough that it dies. This also is not consistent, sometimes it will keep running but keeps getting to the point were it almost dies but doesn't. I have tried everything as far as warming up the car, letting it run a while before turning it off, giving it gas, letting it be, putting it into gear. Any gear I put it into does not change a thing. When it doesn't turn off but keeps rumbling and I try to drive it, it just hesitates according to the the engine speed as it rumbles to almost a stop.

I had someone suggest to me that it might have something to to with the ignition wires touching when they are not supposed to be. Could this be the problem.

oh, I have gone through a couple tanks of gas thinking their could have been water in the gas tank so I know that is not the problem.

Thanks!
