Angry Running Rough at idle and at speed

HAve a 2003 Focus with a 2.0 with 72k

It idles very rough and is very loud. It seems to not have much power but that may be normal because I don't drive it my daughter does.

No codes at all.
I replaced the passenger motor mount, it was bad.
I replaced the driver motor mount, it was bad.
I replaced the torsion motor mount, on the bottom of the engine near the firewall it was not bad but since the others were bad what the heck.

I replaced the plugs (looked ok, a little wear, I originally replaced at 25k when i bought it)
I replaced the wires.
I replaced the coil pack, it was bad could see where the plastic was discolored blue and black due to the arching.

I am starting to get discouraged. I found so many issues and the root problem hasn't change much.

I guess I'll try the EGR valve next.

O2S11 varies 0.07, 0.2, 0.09, 0.8, - Bouncing around
02S12 is pretty steady at 0.04

Maf is steady at 0.4 with the engine hot.
The sensors are read from my Actron.

I checked my 01 F150 5.4 and the O2 sensor readings are similar.

Any Suggestions?

Marietta Georgia may have another auto flambe if I don't fix it soon.

Re: Running Rough at idle and at speed

What is the compression? My 2001 focus lost power rough idle, did compression and it was zero on #2 and #3, #3 had lost its valve seat..It had destroyed the head. piston on #3 and parts of the valve seat was in the intake manifold which #2 had sucked part of it up and got stuck in between valve /seat..Now you can also check all vacuem lines for cracking, replace any that are. You should check the EGR too..But I'd start off with compression and post back what you have..

Re: Running Rough at idle and at speed

Thanks JAvaswing.. I replaced the hose that goes from the pcv valve to the intake. On the spi this is a hard pipe except the 90 bend at the bottom of the intake and the 45 at the valve.
The 45 at the PCV was soft and would collapse. It is much better but still not right. I will check compression this weekend.

Re: Running Rough at idle and at speed

Also can anyone tell me that is just behind the coil pack towards the firewall? It under the black hose that is part of the pvc system.
It has a single plug and is about the same size as the coil pack. It looks like there is an actuator on the back of it.

Your right, its an acuator..it contorls the additional air input nto the clys, there is an thortle plate in each intake port, which it controls.

Re: Running Rough at idle and at speed

I have not replaced the fuel filter. I'll do that today.
its a 2.0 spi single ohc.
The story gets longer.

I was able to note some slight knocking coming from the belt tensioner.
So i picked one up. when I removed the belt I noticed that the idler pullt had play and looks like form the scoring that occasionally it was binding. SO back to the parts store. I replaced th eidler which was quite easy.
The tensioner on the other hand is a real pain in the a.. to replace. the bolt comes from the back side and has no room to get a wrench or socket on. I had to remove the altenator and the six bolts/nuts that hold the mounting bracket for the ac/idler/ps pump and tensioner. this allows you to pull the mounting assembly towards the fromt of the car so you can get a wrench on the bolt.
I put everytning back together and it fixed the slight knock and the belt tracks true. (I replaced the belt of course).
While I was in there I noticed some metal flakes below the front engine mount on the black A shaped housing that the mount bolts to the car with. I have found that the one I put on from Autozone has failed in less than 6 months. I will be repalcing it again tonight. this time I am paying for the Ford part. maybe the one I put on was always bad and that's why the vibration never went away..

More to come.

Re: Running Rough at idle and at speed

Well ... it was the passenger side motor mount. this one i bought from Ford $102.00. I replaced it and now there is no vibration. Who whould have though that the new motor mount form Autozone was bad when I put it on.

I went ahead and replaced the fuel filter also.

but at least for now this saga is over.

Re: Running Rough at idle and at speed

I have a 2002 Focus, SPI engine.
Found teh PCV value was clogged so cleaned it out. Tried to install a new one but it wouldn't fit in properly. That's another story.
I was getting a P0171 code being set, and the engine would run rough at idle when the engine warmed up. Follow the hose from the PCV valve down to the throttle body. Mine had a 90 degree adaptor which had a hole in it at the bend. It was a $10 part from the dealer but I'm happy now.
