Hello, this is Water, I from China, to The States just half year, so my English not good, please forgive me. My question is i need change 96 windstar's head gasket, i got them, but the gasket is same, before this, i thought them must different, becaust the book said i need make sure the UP and FRONT mark is visible, but the new gasket not have UP mark, just have FRONT mark, and them same, i don't know how to put them, the on the gasket list, the number is same too, is right? I mean, I think both them is one side, one side is OK, but another side i can't put the FRONT mark to front, so i don't know how to put them.
Can you tell me how to put them? Thank you very much! |

Re: How to put the 96 Windstar3.6 head gasket?
I've never worked on your year model engine ... so I'm not sure. I have rebuilt the 3.8 in my '99, but it is somewhat different from the '96. On the '99, I believe the gaskets were different for the two heads.
Be sure to closely examine/mark the old gaskets as you remove them ... it could be you will discover that one gasket is installed "upside down" compared to the other. The following may help: . http://www.autozone.com/shopping/rep...00c152800adfae |

Re: How to put the 96 Windstar3.6 head gasket?
When you replace the Head Gaskets.....you MUST replace the lower intake manifold gaskets......as they are NOT re-usable.
The lower intake manifold gaskets are much more likely to fail than the head gaskets on the 1996 3.8L windstar....they leak coolant into the intake....and it is drawn into the cylinders. FORD has improved them.....so the replacment lower intake manifold gaskets should not fail again. Also FORD has several TSBs that say NOT to use any sealers, etc on the head gaskets....they are to be installed dry. They also say that you should NOT use any metal tools to scrape the mating surfaces clean......they MUST be cleaned but solvent and nylon/wood tooling is to be used. You MUST be very careful to NOT make ANY scratches on the gasket seating surfaces....or leakage can result.

Re: How to put the 96 Windstar3.6 head gasket?
Wiswind, have you ever noticed the headgasket set for the '96 ... are there two different unique pieces for left and right ...are do both sides get the same exact piece, either piece can go on either side?
