ABS/Speedometer

I have a 2000 Ranger and it went through a lot of water. Now when I start it the ABS and check engine lights come on but go off. When I hit the brake or use the turn signal the speedometer fluctuates to 0 and back. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Re: ABS/Speedometer

I would check ground connections that got soaked. Use an ohm meter and check from cable to the frame. I would also clean connections to the wheels the water may have loosened some of them.
Also clean connections to the transmission speed sensor.

Re: ABS/Speedometer

The speed pickup is in the rear end. Check there for water in the plug or something loose in that area....Mike

Re: ABS/Speedometer

I had a similar problem. ABS light came on and I noticed that at low speeds, my speedometer was malfunctioning. Got my OEM and found out that ABS is interconnected with the speedometer. I replaced the sensor (located right above and fwd of the differential) Problem solved.

Re: ABS/Speedometer

There's a juction plug under the driver's seat, accessed from ouside. Moisture can get into the plug fron inside the cab, causes all sorts of problems.

Re: ABS/Speedometer

Follow Mike's advice. I had the speedometer going nuts and took out the differential pickup and cleaned it off. Works like champ for the past 3 years.

Best Regards,
Stan
