High RPMs

My 2000 chev venture started reving to 2500. Tapping the accelerator won't do anything. It does not happen all the time. It may do it for an entire trip, and the next time it's fine. I've tried resetting the computer (disconnect battery for a few minutes)

No engine service light either.

any ideas?

Re: High RPMs

What have you been doing when this happens? On my van, 2500 rpm would be moving down the road at pretty good speed--like 60 mph!

There isn't much that can do this and not set a code at the same time. You need to look at the throttle cable linkage and pedal setup, and check the intake butterfly by hand to see that its not sticking anywhere in its rotation.

I don't think its possible for the TPS (throttle position senser) to fail in any way that could cause this and not set a code. Besides, even if the TPS thought the throttle was open enough to get to 2500rpm, the engine would never go that fast unless it had air which means the throttle really is open that far.

If I'm understanding your description correctly, then its running exactly as if you had your foot on gas and held it to 2500rpm?
Don't drive this van, its dangerous until you solve this problem!

Re: High RPMs

think I got it. there were two issues. The cable was loose from the fire wall. Fixed that, but still had high RPMs.

Then I started looking for a vaccum leak. I rotated the engine to look in the back and then noticed that the rubber intake connecting to the plastic housing of the air filter was not seated on the back side. Reseated the hose and that did the trick. Car running great again -- so far....
