no power!!

Hey all, 86 f-250 5.0 f.i. 170000+ miles. Was showing my son how to drive a stick, you know how they bounce and jerk, well did that at a stop light and acted like it flooded out and died. Finally got it started (about an hour later)runs smooth at idle, floor it and it takes a couple of seconds to rev up, not enough power to drive it, then will die. Sometimes will start with the gas peddle down, sometimes will start and idle for quite a while as long as you dont throttle it. Replaced the fuel filter and the coil (tested a little weak). With the timing mark at TDC, distributor points to #1 spot. Any help or ideas appreciated, need the old girl for firewood this winter.

Re: no power!!

I would disconnect the spout and set the timing. I would check the fuel pressure http://www.autopart.com/tools/toolsmain/tool/T_3440.htm
This is a picture of a fuel pressure tester. Put a 12 volt test light on the coil negative and have somebody try and start the vehicle the test light should blink. If it don't blink replace the pickup. Take the module to Advance auto or Auto Zone they will check for free. If you don't get it started the two parts stores will scan the engine for codes free. Post the codes for our review.

Re: no power!!

If by spout you mean vacuum advance, there isn't one on this engine. My understanding is that there is no adjustment on timing. Had module tested, came back good. Still no low end power until rpms get higher, then seems to be ok. Still havn't found a fuel pressure tester yet. Anymore suggestions.

Re: no power!!

Their is a plug near the distributor. You mark the timing marks unplug this plug. Then use a timing light move the distributor until the marks line up.
Then plug the connector back in look at the marks and make sure the computer will advance the time. On my 1985 302 T-B five degrees off would set off computer codes. Shut off the vehicle before plugging or unplugging the connection.
