Power Steering Leak Question
So I got a quick easy one.
I have a leak (well more like a spewing mess) in the drivers side boot (bellow) if the steering rack. My question: Should the bellow have fluid in it normally? I would think logically that the boot is just there to protect the shaft form dirt and debris. Am I looking at just replacing the torn boot or am I looking at pulling the whole rack and replacing the seals. Thanks in advance.

Re: Power Sterring Leak Question
I found my own answer to one of these questions.
THERE SHOULD NOT BE FLUID IN THE BOOTS. There is still some debate as to whether or not I should replace the seals my self or get a re manufactured Rack. ??

Re: Power Sterring Leak Question
You'll have to replace the tie rod shaft seal to stop the leak...fixing the boot will just stop the leak from dripping out. I do not know if they are available at a parts store or dealership separately. If you can avoid having to remove the rack, do so...it is a PITA.

Re: Power Sterring Leak Question
Well.... I ordered a reconditioned rack from a company on ebay. The guys name is RACK DOCTOR. I will post how it goes.
I have the under side of the celica almost ready to remove the rack itself. As the boots were full of fluid, it is proving to be a messy job.

Re: Power Sterring Leak Question
So this rack on this car is a HUGE PITA!
I have swaped engines in less time than it took to replace this damn thing. Thanks in most part to the fact that the Power Steering hoses are routed .002 inches away from each other and the firewall. Needless to say it took a wahile to just get them unpluged and screwed back in. After all was said and done. the Rack fit perfectly and is noticeably tighter. i also repalced the tie rod ends just to be on the safe side. i took the car down for an alignment and eveything seems to be going good.
