86 Cutlass Supreme Broughum..

Man this is petty but my lighter isnt working in my 86. the dam car has never been smoked in and the lighter is as new as it was in 86. So what gives? help a guy out here. I dont want to smoke in it I want to be able to use my gps or car chargers in the port, and I cant right now. thanks

My GM G bodied vehicles always had this issue from the '70s through the '80s. Did you check the fuse? If the fuse keeps blowing you might want to check for a short in the wiring . That was the case many times and once repaired would work again, or you could always add an auxiliary cigarette lighter,( I guess the proper term for these now is power ports? ) in another location. I know they sold them at auto parts stores under the HELP! brand .

Common for coins or metallic wrappers to fall in the lite socket also.

gonna replace all the fuses today with glow fuses

then if i see it keeps blowing Ill dig into the wiring. but hopefully its just a fuse.

I've had that happen a few times. Usually it's the foil gum wrappers from the stick type gum :That was one drawback to these lighters, any form of metal, whether it be a coin, or piece of thin foil, would cause a short and the fuse to blow. Newer vehicles that utilize the old cigarette lighter as a power port have a plastic cover that fits over the top to keep stuff like that out. Obviously, one of the GM engineers got tired of replacing his fuse to put a cover over these units
