1990 lumina 3.1 quits running
my car suddenly shut off. by the time the tow truck brought me home it would restart, but dies after a few minutes running. it will accelerate fine it idles ok, but smells rich. the problem seems heat related. i changed so far:
spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, ignition module under coil pack, crank sensor, i checked fuel pressure w/key on and engine cranking- 42 psi. if i spray carb cleaner through the throttle body the engine runs until i stop. why are the injectors not opening? any insight will be greatly appreciated. |

Re: 1990 lumina 3.1 quits running
Welcome to AF, when it dies you can keep it running with carb cleaner, correct? If so you need to check for injector pulse from the pcm, a shorted injector can cause this, bad pcm, bad ign module also.

Re: 1990 lumina 3.1 quits running
maxwedge,
thanks for the info on the fuel injector. I had no way to check the pulse but I ohmd out each one until I found a bad one. still its hard to believe an injector would shut down the whole system, guess technology is better today. I learned a new task today and I really like my lumina anyhow so thanks again! she runs great. |

Re: 1990 lumina 3.1 quits running
Glad you got her fixed. Just for info, the injector signal is sent from the ECM on the ground side, so if you have one dead shorted injector, it will kill the signal to all.
