Greddy gone?~!

The market for aftermarket parts from Japan has been declining for well over five years, due in part to decreased demand both at home and abroad and the rising rates of Chinese knock-offs and other inexpensive (and dubiously built) components.

Today, one of the world's largest performance parts companies, known as Trust in Japan and Greddy here in the States, declared bankruptcy. According to various reports, Trust is approximately $60 million in debt and, after reporting a serious decline in sales since February 2008 and amassing $43 million in loan payments, filed for bankruptcy in Tokyo District Court.

Trust has been around since 1976, employs almost 200 workers and had been dealing in everything from CARB-legal exhausts to turbo systems when Greddy Performance Products was founded in the U.S. in 1994. There are several firms that will step up to fill the need of enthusiasts, assuming that Trust doesn't try to reorganize, but with the aftermarket industry down overall, we suspect this won't be the last time we'll here about a large tuner going under.

Exactly why they went out of business. People want quality for nothing, buy the knock-offs, and the people who developed these products lose jobs.

Winning attitude there...

The good news is, the cheap-asses will still get parts as they filed Chapter 11 as opposed to Chapter 7 and the US division is still kicking...just like APEX.

Re: Greddy gone?~!

People dont have enough money to throw at ridiculously priced parts. Most people can barely afford to even have a car and keep it up.

This is a priorities issue, not a vendor issue. If you can't pay to play, don't play. Too simple, right?

If we keep up this brokedick mentality, there will be NO innovate products EVER for DSMers.

Well hopefully somebody can support the innovators, because I sure can't.

Note that my comments aren't directed at you, but after reading this on EVERY board I frequent and seeing the "whatever" mentality over and over again, I'm beginning to lose patience with people.

blah

I agree parts from most major places like Greddy are overly expensive, but most of the times you get what you pay for. People are going to be cheap and buy crappy knockoffs, and then bitch when it doesn't work. But they'll replace it with another piece of crap and have the same issues. In the end, then end up buying the same item enough times as it would just to buy the name brand one. I'm guilty of this too, but I can't remember what exactly it was.

However, you have to know where you can go cheap on. Take me for example when I turboed the ESi. Turbo is a true Garrett that I got for nothing, not some eBay wanna be. FMIC and piping were "eBay JDM" or whatever eBay brand it was. Pipes are pipes, and the FMIC isn't big and not holding a lot of power. BOV 1st gen DSM, and the wastegate is a true Tial. You can go cheap on some parts, but anything as a major component like the wastegate and BOV, where if one fails you can have some major issues, I would never skimp on those. But yet there's kits out there that have all the crappy products and people buy them, blow their car up, buy a new car, and make the same mistake again.

We need good companies around to continue making products that are true to their word on what they do and to continue research. These knock offs are buying an official product, and then just replicating them with cheaper parts. We have to give all the big companies for credit on all they have done in the category.

Re: Greddy gone?~!

Tis sad that Greddy is gone. They had good quality stuff... Nothing wrong with cheap brand piping and intercoolers, but for other stuff you just can't sacrifice the quality...

No, its cool.

But still, I'm really not upset that Greddy is going out. Yeah it sucks for them. But again, look at their products. Everything they sell...you can get just as good if not better product for half the price. Seriously. Whats so good about anything they make....nothing, even if there was, not enough to justify the price difference. $600 exhausts? Are they on crack? I dont even have a catback on my car but I would spend $200 on a ebay setup way before I would spend $600 on a Greddy unit. So its titanium or w/e...wow 2 pound weight savings, oh its dyno tested,....really? Wow, 2 more HP than the ebay unit. Don't even get me started on their turbos? Ha!

Re: Greddy gone?~!

In reality...you get what you pay for. I agree that there are a lot of parts that you don't need to spend alot of money on to get the same results such as an exhaust system or a ram air system/CAI. I bought my CAI for my Tbird off ebay for just under $40, K&N wanted $124.99 just for the filter...ef that!! Greddy has made some nice parts made w/ great quality material that we can trust, such as the Type RS BOV which I still need to get BTW. It's sad to see them go but there will always be another company to replace them.

Re: Greddy gone?~!

If you can't adapt to the market, you go under. Simple as that. Greddy didn't see the change as much of a threat, or they were too stubborn to roll with it. When you can get parts for 1/5 of the cost that are maybe not as high of quality but close enough to justify the cost difference, you are doing something wrong. While some people feel like $600 on an exhaust that has been tuned and perfected for their car is a realistic cost, most people will laugh at that when you can get 80% of the quality for 20% of the price. They should have toned down their costs a little so they could provide parts at a more realistic cost, even if their quality took a bit of a dip...they would be in a better spot now than not changing at all.
