left tail light and brake light inoperational

I just recently purchased a 2002 Sport Trac and the left rear turn signal and brake light aren't working, tried looking at my haynes manual for my ranger but to no avail the mosy current diagram is for a '95 ranger. bulb is good no visable breaks in the wire and continuity is good to the connector up to the plug by the transfer case. is there a relay that could be burnt? does any one have a scematic for the lighting for the '02 sport trac? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: left tail light and brake light inoperational

Have you checked for voltage to the bulb socket and verified that the bulb is good by applying power to it? Just looking at the filament could be deceptive.

Also, did someone maybe wire in an aftermarket trailer wiring harness in to the factory wiring rather than using the trailer wiring pigtail connector? If so, the wires at that splice may be bad.

Does the 02 Sport Trac use the same bulb filament for both turn signal AND brake? I thought they were separate, in which case if neither of them work and the bulb is good, I would suspect a ground issue.

Re: left tail light and brake light inoperational

the light socket is the same for the tail and brake light. i checked the continuity on the bulb and it was fine and i was wrong the tail light works not the left rear turn signal and brake light, my fault. i also checked for voltage at the pin connector by the transfer case and didn't get voltage there either. is there a separate relay for the left blinker and brake light? you wouldn't happen to have a scematic handy would you?

Re: left tail light and brake light inoperational

There is one Park/Turn Lamp Relay that controls battery voltage for the park/turn lamps at all 4 corners of your Sport Trac. This relay is only present if your Sport Trac has the convenience package. If not, there is no relay. There is also one stop lamp switch for all three brake lights, and that feed is on the light green wire to the multifunction switch. At the multifunction switch, the wires are broken out separately for the left and right sides as well as front and rear. The Brown/Yellow wire is for the rear right side and the Dark Blue/White wire is for the left side rear. At the Central Junction Box, these wires change colors to Orange/Light Blue and Light Green/Orange respectively.

The wiring diagram also shows that both rear park/turn lamp assemblies share a ground point on the vehicle.

It would seem that if your bulb is good and the ground at the bulb socket is good, but you don't have voltage to the rear and only rear on the left side, the problem would have to be with the multifunction switch.
