93 2.0 DOHC Non-Turbo Engine - Power Drop

In 2004 we had a timing belt failure that ended in a used engine swap into our 93. The used engine long block came from Japan we were told.

All the peripherals (intake, exhaust, fuel injection etc) were used from the original engine.

We noticed right away that the new engine did not have the torque or HP (at least the snappy feel) that the original engine had. To this day it still lacks power by comparison. Compression check yesterday, 185-190 on all 4 cyl. Hwy fuel milegage is 27-28.

Is it posible the replacement engine has different cams or something that lowers it's HP output? Any other ideas?

Welcome to AF!

Were any mods done to the old engine that you know of? Check the timing on the new engine, make sure the TDC marks line up properly. Although you would more than likely get lower compression because of that, it's still an option. Any check engine light?

Is it a 2.0 motor for a turbo? I don't know what stock compression for that motor is.

No mods to the original engine. I knew the first owner, my ex-girl friend. Thanks for reading!
