manual transmission + surging problems
OK, I had asked a question some time ago about putting a 5 speed manual transmission in a '94 JGC Unlimited with the 5.2L. I have done a bunch of research on the transmissions available that would fit the 318(5.2L) and came to the conclusion that the New Venture NV3500 or the NV3550 would be good candidates, preferably the NV3550 cause everything I had read about the NV3500 claims it is weak. For the transfer case I figure the New process NP241OR would be the better choice since it will accept a VSS(Vehicle Speed Sensor).
My only question still is the pedal assembly. I know I could go down to the local race shop and get a universal floor mount hydraulic clutch but don't really want that. I am thinking that a regular Cherokee pedal assembly from about the same year may work? Anybody have any ideas on this? OK, I had also asked this plenty of times before. I have surging really bad at idle and as the engine warms up more it gets worse and it now doing this while driving. Not just at idle anymore. I have replaced all my sensors but one, the MAP sensor and had them cleared of the code 52 I was getting. I drove it about 2 weeks all was going well with no check engine light but still had the surge at idle only. Check engine light came back on and now the surging is really bad and sometimes when I take off from a stop it falls on it's face and acts like it is about to completely die out but has not yet. Everything I read people keep saying to replace the IAC valve and/or the TPS. I have already replaced these once before and I even tested them with a multi meter and they have the correct voltages that they are supposed to have through out the testing. I am wondering if the MAP sensor could be causing any of these problems? Another though was maybe I had a cracked distributor cap or something a long those lines? I am usually good with figuring these problems out but this vehicle is starting ot frustrate me. Also I am getting code 52 again, which I take it it is referring to the O2 sensor. that to is less than 2 weeks old and a direct OEM replacement. Is it possible that something is causinf this to go bad or am I just getting bad ones. This is the only sensor I have not tested. It acts like it has a miss to it from time to time but I think it is fuel related, not positive though but had thought that was the reason for the surging. I had even wondered if it might be a burnt or bent valve causing it to run like this? I love the Jeep and have a lot of plans for it but getting it to run good is my first priority. The 5 speed can wait till then, I also read that the 5 speed transmission would not harm any of the sensors of the Jeep cause the automatic that is in it right now is not computer controlled whatsoever like the newer JGC's. Only thing is the VSS. |

Re: manual transmission + surging problems
Apparently I am walking into new territory with a manual transmission swap into a JGC cause of no suggestions.
Anyway, I am still having issues with the idle and seems to getting worse everyday. The only time I have noticed it to run really good with no problems has been since the morning temperatures have been in the high 50's when I take the kids to the bus stop. After the day warms up or I drive it till the engine starts warming up really good that is when the jeep starts back to running like crap. So, I am at a complete toss up, I was told that unplugging the MAP sensor while the vehicle is running will shut it down if it is working properly. I did this and it stopped running, so if this is true then the MAP sensor must still be good. So now I am on to the air temerature charge sensor and then also searching for vacuum leaks. Only other idea I would have then would be cracked distributor, possibly bad wires and spark plugs too. I figure a ignition tune up would not hurt but I doubt if that is the problem. Other ideas would be welcomed, I also unplugged the IAC motor and it has no change or effect in the way the Jeep runs. The TPS causes thevehicle to idle up and down really bad when it is unplugged. I am ready to send it to the crusher and let it be cruched for junk over this problem and I know it is something small that I am overlooking. |

Re: manual transmission + surging problems
if it runs good cold and bad hot, that tells me there is a problem while in closed loop mode.
you can try looking at the o2 sensor(s). a bad sensor could cause that.also, if your map(mas air pressure) is off and reads the air as being more dense, it could also cause a Rich Fuel Condition. a good scan tool would make this very easy to diagnose. |

Re: manual transmission + surging problems
Thing is, I had the O2 replaced and it still had the same problems, just not as bad. I have a scan tool but it only shows code 52 and that is all. I will try to replace the O2 agian and the MAP sensor as well and see what happens then. I have a gut feeling it will be fine for a week or a little longer and then back to the same problems again.

Re: manual transmission + surging problems
Was curious about the computer(PCM), think it may be bad? Anyway of testing the computer itself to find out if it may be bad?
