68 Mustang Motor help
Hello my name is JC Crowder and i am 17 years old, i just bought a 68 ford mustang that had a 289 in it, i pulled a 351 out of an old mach one and wanted to know what kind of frame mounts and modifications would be needed to complete this process.
Thanks |

Re: 68 Mustang Motor help
JC,
Welcome to the world of old cars! The 351, is it a Windsor or a Cleveland? A Windsor looks just like the 289, but the "spread" between the heads is wider (intake manifold). The valve covers are the same. If it is, the headers MAY fit, but the wider block may require a pair made just for the Windsor. The '69 Mustang has a similar engine compartment, so headers for the '69 should fit. The mounts are the same. The Cleveland has MUCH wider cylinder heads, and the valve covers are much different. When properly built, the Cleveland will provide much better performance, as well. The headers from the 289 will NOT fit. The headers for a '70 Mach 1 with the 351C will fit. The mounts for the '70 should also fit. Jim |

Re: 68 Mustang Motor help
it is a windsor, i might have to find another old mustang for the frame mounts because im having trouble trying to find them. My dad has a four bolt cleveland but he wont let me have that one because he has a PQ mach 1 and hopes to put it in that.

Re: 68 Mustang Motor help
The part number for the mounts are the same for either the '68 289 or the '69 351. You shouldn't need anything different.
The crossmember is the same, as well. I measured the width of the blocks where the mounts attach. Same same... Aside from the slightly larger width at the top, these engines are pretty much the same, externally, including the bellhousing pattern and starter. Jim |
