Question ECLIPSE CV boot/half shaft/ transaxle replacement help!

So i'm changing the half shafts on a 2002 mitsubishi eclipse... 3.0 6 cylinder...

no ABS

2 wheel front drive.

Driver side is straight into the transmission... don't think i'll have a problem w/ that one... (just pry out from transmission)

but the passenger side issss... an intermediate shaft w/ a support bracket. Support bracket (two bolts) is now unbolted.

The shaft connects to the axle w/ a tripod bearing cased in a tulip....

I got the tripod bearing out along w/ the shaft... just need to get the ***** tulip off.... I don't know if these are pressed on or not... and hoping I don't have to remove the whole passenger side axle to get it pressed off. Just beat the **** out of it w/ a hammer and block? This is the only thing holding me up ehhh...

I can send a pic if it is of assistance...

i'm to the point of seeing how far i can drive with 3 wheels and run it into a brick wall. I've worked on a few vehicle front ends before...but this one has got me stummped I have both new have shafts I just purchased... One looks like a male end with the spline and clip...the other looks like a female that the spline slides into... Which i'm GUESSING the female is for the passenger side?

ASK ME QUESTIONS! so i can help you....HELP ME! haha

Thanks,

-Preston

Exclamation Re: ECLIPSE CV boot/half shaft/ transaxle replacement help!

for anybody doing this task in the future...

you have to remove the whole passenger side axle straight from the transmission. Then beat the **** out of the tulip casing to seperate it from the transaxle.....

It's pressed on....but me being average joe schmo...i have no access to these kind of tools... I used my handy dandy hammer and about an hour of spare time. I would deff. recommend just taking it in and having it pressed off or use a special puller to seperate it so you don't ruin anything.. The drivers side should be cake... only one shaft.

If anybody else needs help w/ a job like this i might put together some pics and a description seeing as it seems almost impossible to find posts/pictures for this model of car...

I had a 1990 f150 baja truck...and I could find absolutely anything pic. by pic how to tear apart steering columns engine rebuilds etc. Eclipse...NOTHING.

Please post if you have any tips or tricks for me as i am still in the process of doing the job...I'm just taking a break seeing as i live in AZ and it's about 110 degrees out right now...

Cool Re: ECLIPSE CV boot/half shaft/ transaxle replacement help!

Now I'm at a dead hault...

can't get the shaft back into the transmission...

moved it all around back/forth/up/down tapped w/ a hammer/ tried using the weight of the shaft to ram it in...nothin. I don't understand... i've done a civic and the shaft first try went "ploomp" and clicked in. Theres not even a circlip on this shaft to be hitting...

Only thing i can think of is that the spline is messed up inside or on the axle... yet it came out w/ no problem...

any ideas?

Re: ECLIPSE CV boot/half shaft/ transaxle replacement help!

the axle on the passenger side straight outta the transmission that connects to the countershaft was tweaked. They had to replace the half shaft AND the axle. Axle was a dealer only part w/ the bearings. 336 bucks for a small piece of metal with teeth at the end. Rediculous.

Once they ordered the new axle they connected it to the half shaft and it slid right in....

Re: ECLIPSE CV boot/half shaft/ transaxle replacement help!

Ah...

What you should have done instead was told them you didn't wanna spend that kind of money to fix it and then take the car back. Then just go back the next day and order the new axle anyways. Then your coulda saved the rest of the cash you had in them installing it. lol...

And just in defense to your one post against AF for not helping... None of us would have been able to know that the axle was tweaked... Just sayin...

Ah... Yeah, sounds like it.

I wasn't around sooner or I would have thrown a suggestion or two in here anyways. I haven't had much time to be on here like I used to be so I didn't see this thread till today. Sorry. Next time ya might have more luck around here though before ya have to end up takin it to a shop. At least its back on the road now.
