clicking sound when accelerating in 2wd & 4wd
i have a 1993 jeep cherokee 4wd, 5 speed, 4.0 engine. when im in 2wd or 4hi or 4lo and i take off fast there is a clicking sound coming from either the trans, transfer-case, or front end. it only clicks a few times then stops.

Re: clicking sound when accelerating in 2wd & 4wd
U JOINTS!. had the same problem with my 94. under heavy acceleration was the only time. "thought" my ujoints were fine but when i did my lift kit the rear driveshaft u joint that goes to the differention pracitcally fell apart so. make sure that you take a look at those and make sure there is NO movement. if there is, replace. theyre only like 15 bucks from napa and easier to change than the front axle u joints.

Re: clicking sound when accelerating in 2wd & 4wd
Solid with no rust or movement was how mine were before I replaced them....and my clicking went away. The inside is the important part and a visual inspection won't see that.
How many miles do you have? If it's more than 90K and you haven't replaced the U joints, then I agree 100% with soldierp89. The only other thing I can think of that clicks under acceleration would be a broken wheel stud.

Re: clicking sound when accelerating in 2wd & 4wd
my jeep has 135,000 miles on it and the guy i bought it from was not a mechanic of any sort. are you saying both my front and rear ujoints are bad?

IMO, replace the rears and then reevaluate.

Re: clicking sound when accelerating in 2wd & 4wd
i had something weird happen today. i was driving and i smelt a bruning smell and when i braked the jeep would veer off to the left. i just put need pads and new rotors on both front wheels. then i shut off the car for a while. then later fired it up and drove 8 miles without a problem. what could that be?
thanks |

Re: clicking sound when accelerating in 2wd & 4wd
possibly one of the calipers wasn't reinstalled correctly i know it sounds far-fetched but i've seen it before the caliper overheated then by some overwhelmingly confusing way that is completely beyond me it managed to realign it self
