Replacing a manual transmission with automatic?

This is a serious question and i was wondering if you can replace a manual transmission with an automatic transmission and if so, how much would it cost?

Re: Replacing a manual transmission with automatic?

Welcome to AF, too vague a question, some vehicle/engine combos are not set up to do this and some are, also the expense and mods can make it prohibitive, late model vehicles would need matching pcm wiring and programming.

Re: Replacing a manual transmission with automatic?

What kind of vehical is it anyway?....Some vehicals you can't but most of the time you have to remove the bell housing and obtain a flex plate that will match the engine block and auto trany.... you would have to change starters for sure and perhaps even the flywheel....

Re: Replacing a manual transmission with automatic?

Is this to convert an existing car for a driver who cannot drive a manual?

If so, it is probably cheaper to sell the manual trans car and buy the same or similar model of car with an automatic.

Almost all mass-produced cars made in the past 40+ years with a manual also had an optional automatic transmission. Usually the automatic transmission versions were much more common and thus, more widely available in the used car market.

Re: Replacing a manual transmission with automatic?

On a newer type car, I'd also suggest getting another car. On pre-computer cars it was a lot easier. There is just too many things to be changed for me to even consider it. Then there is probably a lot of dicking around to fine tune it to get everything to work right.

Re: Replacing a manual transmission with automatic?

To replace a handle transmission with an automatic transmission ,of course the first one is the transmission, then the shift the pedal ,clucth, and the ECU.After you have replace all of the component above ,it is still can't make sure you car will work well. So as the above l suggest you sold you handle transmission car and buy a automatic transmission car .
