I have a 89 jeep Cherokee laredo. It had been sitting at my dad's place for about a year and a half. I decided to use it for this upcoming winter since it has 4wd. We got it up and going and checked everthing, except we forgot to check the trans fluid. I got about 15 miles up the road and in started to act funny. When i checked the trans fluid the stick was dry. So i immediatly added fluid. but now everytime i drive it, I have to reach about 4500 rpms to get it to shift up. it runs fine then but if it shifts down then up to 4500 rpms again to shift. We have replaced the trans filter and fluid. but no better results.

My bro read something about a limp mode. Is that the problem and if so how do i fix it? If not what is the problem?

does it do it in drive(D) mode only. or does it also do it on low(1-2) mode?

there is a power button (on most older cherokees)on the dashboard. insure that is not in power mode.
the transmission has vacuum solenoids, check around the back side of the engine for a vacuum line. insure that it is properly hooked up and not leaking.

if it shifts that high of an rpm and you drove it empty your first route may be to replace the trans filter and fluid

allways start with the cheapest possibiltys first nothing is better than spending $3500 to have all your fuel injectors replaced just to find your fuel filter was clogged see my idea

Like I said, I already replaced the Trans filter.

Was the fluid burnt, I have an 89 to and had a simular problem with it getting out of gear at highway speeds. I drained the tranny completely, added a bottle of Lucas tranny treatment, and adjusted the TV cable at the t-body, all seems to work. Check you TV cable adjustment, with a closed throttle, there should be only a small amount of slack in the cable, if too much, you'll shift weird. To adjust just press in the half circle button, and pull back on the cable shieth, till the slack is almost gone. Then drive it a couple miles and see what happens.

Add the lucas treatment to the pan, before you reinstall it, too thick to pour down the dipstick tube.
